Who Does It Help?
I work with teens ages 13 through 17 (and their parents) who struggle with
• Self-harm, cutting, and suicidal thoughts
• Eating disorders
• Low self-esteem
• Academic struggles
• Chronic stress
• Social skills
• Drug and alcohol abuse
These problems prevent your family from having a deeper relationship and stand in the way of living a fuller life.
As an adolescent, it can be very hard to talk to parents and adult family friends for fear of punishment, rejection, or concerns about worrying you too much. Low self-esteem makes reaching out even more complicated because seeking treatment can feel like a failure, but it’s not! Rarely are people able to cope with serious stressors alone and you don’t need to suffer in solitude any longer.
Successful therapy for teens can
• Provide them with effective, sustainable stress management skills
• Teach them healthy ways to self-comfort
• Reduce or eliminate mood swings
• Increase confidence
• Improve communication in family relationships
HOW DOES IT WORK?
At the beginning of therapy, we will decide approximately how long you might want to work with me. Some people attend only a few sessions while others stay longer.
We will also talk about privacy and set up ground rules so everyone is clear about what I will or will not tell each family member. This depends on age and some legal exceptions, which we will discuss in detail at the first session.
I will meet with the teenager individually and/or with family members, depending on the problems the teenager is facing. We may work with only one person long-term, but it is usually more effective to include parents from time to time. This teaches how to best support and understand your child.
WHY I WANT TO HELP
Most families struggle with communication (even when trying to do it from a loving place). Caring for each other is lost in translation and you end up resenting one another due to pure misunderstandings. Doing this work clarifies each person’s needs; once this is sorted through, you can learn skills to live together and get along in brand new ways.
It warms my heart to watch people heal their hurt together. The changes I see not only impact the immediate family, but also radiate outward to people at school, work, and the world at large, making a widespread impact.
FEES & TIME COMMITMENT
We can meet for either 50- or 75-minute sessions, depending on your preference. If we meet for longer sessions, we will likely need fewer of them overall and it can speed up your progress.
