WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM RELATIONSHIP THERAPY?
It is difficult to work through conflict when you feel stuck in opposing positions, unable to find compromise. If you and your partner(s) are struggling to get along, therapy may be what you need.
Pain in relationships builds up slowly and subtly; it can be so sneaky that you suddenly don’t feel close to your partner(s) but don’t know why. On the other hand, it can be so obvious that it feels too overwhelming to address at all.
You are not alone. Even when you feel despair or hopelessness, there is help available!
Relationship therapy bonds you with your partner(s) in the following ways:
• Safely discuss and navigate opening or closing your relationship
• Slow down discussions so each person in the relationship feels truly understood and heard
• Repair damage related to secretive affairs
• Increase feelings of emotional and physical closeness
• Improve your sex life by working through conflict and physical discomfort
• Take responsibility for your needs while honoring your partner(s)’s
• Learn the ways your partner(s) feels most loved
• Gain insight into your partner(s)’s reactions
• Know each other deeply
• Find forgiveness for your partner(s)’s mistakes
My approach includes completing a thorough pre-therapy assessment with each partner. Based on the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, this entails completing a few relationship-related surveys that will take each person approximately 2 hours.
Even though this feels like a big time commitment up front, it saves us hours of time in therapy. Because you complete the surveys at home, it also means you don’t have to pay for the time you’re filling them out. There are no right or wrong answers and these are not traditional “tests.” Just do your best to be honest and complete every form.
I take 1-2 hours to review, score, and interpret the answers to identify the problematic areas of your relationship. See fee information for this time below.
Our first meeting involves seeing partners together and discussing foundational information, as well as setting up guidelines for treatment. We review your communication and conflict resolutions styles and obtain basic physiological measures (heart rate, oxygen level, etc.) to establish a baseline. These numbers help us to know how to regulate emotions in future sessions. We’ll also discuss the assessment results.
The second meeting involves separate 60-minute sessions with each partner. We establish confidentiality limits before these appointments.
We then meet together again to summarize the information and move on to conflict management and relationship building skills.

When I watch romantic partners express themselves to their significant other(s), I am blown away by the sometimes hidden affection people have for each other. These desires and appreciations often go unsaid or unnoticed outside of therapy because people are afraid of rejection, fighting, and lack of structure.
By making a dedicated space for this type of communication, you can practice your newly learned skills and take them home with you. You can model them in front of your children and share them with friends and family.
There is so much hidden potential that needs to be drawn out of you and your partner(s) by a third party. It absolutely warms my heart to have the honor of being that person!
FEES & TIME COMMITMENT
With the exception of the individual 60-minute sessions, therapy sessions for romantic partners are typically 75 minutes. This time provides each of you with an opportunity to express yourselves thoroughly and discuss important topics. Because we meet for longer sessions, we will likely need fewer of them overall and it tends to provide tangible, faster progress.
It’s integral to attend relationship therapy consistently. Part of the healing is showing your partner your willingness to follow through with your commitment for the duration of our work together.
